Singapore, Jul. 12, 2021 - ION Mobility, a smart electric motorbike company which designs and makes products that deliver seamless user experiences for sustainable mobility, announced it had parted ways with former co-founder and COO Joel Chang as director and employee as of April 2021.
Founder and CEO James Chan said: “Regrettably, due to professional differences, Joel and I have come to a mutual decision that he will leave ION Mobility in March 2021 in order to also better focus on his family. It is with a heavy heart that I accept his departure. We incorporated the company in October 2019 and went through a lot together. Like any startup cofounder duo, we have had our professional differences, but through it all in the past 18 months, I have always appreciated his contributions and effort to the company and team. I wish him the best in all his future endeavours.”
Joel Chang said: “I am immensely grateful for the privilege of being part of ION Mobility’s journey since the beginning. Working alongside such a talented team of partners and engineers has been a truly humbling and inspirational learning experience for me. Despite the professional differences James and I have had, I wish James and the company success as there is no better time than now to accelerate our transition towards better mobility for cleaner air and improved human health.”
The company welcomes Ting Feng Toh to the company’s Board as its Non-Executive Director alongside James Chan. Ting Feng is an early investor in ION Mobility and later led the AngelCentral syndicate’s investment into the company. Ting Feng is also co-founder and CEO of vehicle sharing startup GetGo.
Ting Feng said, “I’m honoured to serve on ION Mobility’s board and look forward to stewarding the company’s best interests alongside James as he and his team endeavour to deliver an amazing EV motorbike and riding experience.”
James shared, “It is never easy to pick the right non-executive Director, much less one that is as affinitive to our journey and mission as Ting Feng. I have known Ting Feng since 2005 and trust him and his skills and instincts to always act in the company’s best interests.”
At the same time, in recognition of their significant commitment and contributions to the company’s mission, the company promoted three of its team members - Xianyi Wu, Hosen Ng and Calvin Cheng - to its senior leadership team alongside James.
Xianyi Wu, having joined the company as Chief Design Officer, has been redesignated as Chief Product and Design Officer. A veteran in product design, Xianyi began his career as cofounder of d.light, which has since grown into a global leader in delivering affordable solar-powered solutions for the developing world without access to reliable energy. Xianyi has worked alongside James across two previous startups in robotics and fintech since 2015.
Hosen Ng joined the company as Vice President (Mechanical) and has been promoted to Chief Vehicle Engineer. Hosen previously worked at Honda designing and launching internal-combustion powered motorcycles, as well as Scorpio Electric where he led the engineering of the Scorpio X.
Calvin Cheng invested in the company’s previous funding round, before joining as Director (Software). Calvin started his career at Esco Micro and brings a polymathic repertoire across product development, full-stack software engineering and blockchain to ION as its new Chief Technology Officer.
James said, “I’ve worked closely with Xianyi, Hosen and Calvin over the past year. We could not have caught up with our milestones thus far without their personal contributions and leadership alongside our team members in Singapore, Shenzhen and Jakarta. The combined breadth and depth of this leadership team puts us on a firm footing to deliver ION’s electric motorbikes for a cleaner and greener Southeast Asia.”
ION Mobility remains on track to reveal its inaugural electric motorbike by the end of this year, and to launch and deliver in Indonesia next year.
