Jakarta, November 2, 2022 – Smart electric motorcycle company ION Mobility (ION) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) through its wholly owned subsidiary PT. Industri Ion Mobilitas with PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), for the provision of Electric Vehicle (EV) motorcycle charging infrastructure facilities and solutions for ION’s and PLN’s users.
Under the partnership, ION will contribute to the near-term expansion of the SPLU network with an initial commitment to install up to 100 co-branded SPLU chargers across DKI Jakarta, with an eye on expanding the network nationwide in step with market needs. These new (and existing) charging stations will be locatable through both ION’s and PLN’s mobile app. This allows users to conveniently locate and use more than 2,900 SPLU chargers in DKI Jakarta, and the rest of the over-6,500 SPLU chargers across Indonesia.
The MoU was officiated by Indonesian Minister of Industry bpk Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita at the Indonesia Motorcycle Show 2022, with Singapore Ambassador to Indonesia Mr. Kwok Fook Seng also in attendance.
Minister Agus Kartasasimta shared, "In accordance with President Joko Widodo's mandate in Presidential Regulation Number 55 of 2019 concerning the Acceleration Program for Battery-Powered EVs for Road Transport, we will lead Indonesia to be ready to usher in the EV era. One thing that must be pursued is not only the preparation of an EV development roadmap, but also the provision of various incentives to encourage the development of the EV ecosystem in Indonesia. The latest Presidential Regulation Number 7 of 2022 will see all government vehicles transition fully to EVs in the next 3 years. For this reason, I warmly welcome the joint initiative to develop SPLU with a pay-as-you-use payment system which will greatly benefit motorcycle users across Indonesia."
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said, “Despite the initial successful deployment of the SPLU network, it is important for us to step up our efforts by joining hands with industry-leading players like ION, to better understand Indonesian user requirements, improve EV charger technology, usability, reliability, and deployment cost. In doing so, PLN can continue to support Indonesians’ shift towards EVs while ensuring Indonesia’s energy security and contribute towards achieving net zero emissions by 2060.”
ION founder and CEO James Chan said, “We are excited to embark on this partnership with PLN and build upon each other’s complementary strengths. Beyond adding to PLN’s SPLU network, our team is eager to bring affordable fast charging technology to ION’s and other compatible EV motorcycles in the coming years, so that users can achieve up to 100km of riding range with a mere 15-minute charge. We believe the ideal energy infrastructure that can support a full transition to EV motorcycles in Indonesia will be a network of quick-chargers, fast-chargers, and battery swaps powered by the PLN electrical network.”
ION adopts a full-stack, end-to-end approach towards the design, research and development, product development, multi-disciplinary engineering, and manufacturing of its electric mobility, charging and energy storage solutions. PLN is Indonesia’s national grid and electricity provider and is leading the transformation of Indonesia’s electrical grid in support of the country’s commitment and transition from Internal-Combustion-Engine (ICE) to Electrical (EV) motorcycles. This collaboration means users can achieve up to 100km riding range for every hour of charge[1] when quick-charging the ION M1-S. The M1-S is ION’s inaugural product for Indonesia, which is equipped with a weather-proof onboard charger that can achieve up to 150km in a single charge[2] via its onboard battery pack, and exceeds 200km with the addition of a secondary battery pack[3].
