ION Mobility's First Electric Motorbike to Hit the Roads in Indonesia Next Year
Singapore start-up unveiled the ION Mobius today ahead of schedule despite the challenges posed by the pandemic
SINGAPORE – 2 DECEMBER 2021 – ION Mobility, the Singapore-based smart electric motorbike and energy storage solutions start-up, today unveiled its first EV (or battery-powered) two-wheeler, the ION Mobius. The state-of-the-art design and precision engineered motorbike is the culmination of 18 months of rigorous effort and dexterity, from a dedicated team of designers, engineers, and technologists across three countries to provide a sustainable urban solution, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.
Dr Tan See Leng, Minister for Manpower and Second Minister for Trade and Industry, was the Guest-of-Honour at today’s event at JTC LaunchPad @ One-North. The unveiling was followed by a live demonstration and a tour of the vehicle and battery pack assembly line.
The Southeast Asian region is home to over 200 million petrol-powered two-wheelers. In fact, more than 80% of households in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam own motorcycles. However, the widespread use of petrol-powered internal combustion engine motorbikes continues to put a burden on urban air quality and the environment, which makes electric motorbikes a much more attractive alternative. Research suggests that the global market for two-wheeler and three-wheeler electric vehicles is valued at US$97 billion, or about 4% of global auto sales and estimated to reach US$150 billion by 2022.
ION Mobility's Founder and CEO, James Chan, explains: "It was our team's vision to create a viable electric alternative to the ubiquitous petrol-powered motorcycle. In recent years, we have seen an accelerated shift towards sustainable practices and nation-level industry realignment for the upcoming electric vehicle transition. We have leveraged on this momentum to break new ground in the electric mobility space for Southeast Asia. With the ION Mobius, we position ourselves as one of the front-runners to accelerate the transition away from petrol and towards electric in the region."
The unveiled ION Mobius is truly a Singapore-led e-vehicle development effort as it was conceptualised, designed, and assembled here. The company operates with its 40-odd staff across three different countries, with more than half forming its Singapore operations. As it ramps up its scale and operations, ION Mobility will look to expand its team as it caters to growing demand.
For starters, motorbike enthusiasts in Indonesia can expect pre-orders to begin soon. The company is commencing its homologation of the ION Mobius in Indonesia and expects to start in-country assembly operations in the Greater Jakarta region by the first half of 2022.
Elaborating more on the Indonesian market, James added: "We set out to create something desirable and compelling to urban motorbike riders, starting from Indonesia that has one of the highest numbers of motorbike users in Southeast Asia. We intend to transform the end-to-end product and customer experience for motorbike riders with an ideal price position. We can’t wait to introduce the ION Mobius onto the roads of Indonesia next year. With our long-term vision to expand across Southeast Asia with Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines on the radar thereafter.”
